Kurt Cobain died 20 years ago today. Here’s a longish interview with him. In the opening, he talks about his favourite book and how it influenced him — Patrick Süskind’s 1985 novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Actually, a surprisingly thoughtful and amiable interview. Aura of sadness. Poverty at the back of story after story. I’ve never noticed this interview before. So it startled me.

His song “Scentless Apprentice” came from the novel.

Below are the trailer and the birth scene from the movie based on the novel (not for the faint of heart).

Put this all together and what do you have?

  1. And 8 months later, he no longer wanted to live…very sad indeed.

  2. Doctor or cremation factory? Tough choice…there’s a vulnerability underlying everything he says…I was in Paris in the Spring of ’94 just after Kurt’s death and have a vivid memory of a street performer playing Smells Like Teen Spirit. Brings back the 3 events that were in the forefront of my week in Paris – Kurt Cobain’s death, Jackie O’s death, the publication of First Man by Camus and, oh yeah – I saw Doctor Death walking up Rue St. Denis in a red corduroy suit carrying a briefcase…

  3. Wow, that second trailer is powerful…
