Taiaiake Alfred is a Kahnawake Mohawk from just outside Montreal, a former Marine, a scholar specializing in indigenous governance at the University of Victoria, a fierce and diligent advocate for native rights in Canada. He has published three scholarly books and any number of essays, polemics and columns, but lately he has turned to fiction to explore the world of his birth. It's a wonderful opportunity and privilege for Numéro Cinq to offer the first preview of his work in progress which he calls "true" and a lament and which is sad and powerful and, yes, a keen for a lost land.
