The tried and true revenge plot takes on a decidedly yuletide flavour as “Treevenge” explores the trauma and abuse Christmas trees face, and then offers a cathartic glimpse into their ultimate, bloody revenge.

The film was created by local (to me) Halifax filmmakers Rob Cotteril and Jason Eisener who first got notice for their fake film trailer for “Hobo with a Shotgun” which won Robert Rodriguez’s SXSW Grindhouse Trailer Competition and was featured as part of the double feature theatre release of Rodriguez’s and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse. They have since developed the fake trailer into a real film featuring Rutger Hauer.

Happy Holidays to everyone. Especially the trees.

  1. Rob, A totally captivating, heart-warming Christmas movie. Right up there with Miracle on 42nd Street. It reminded me of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in White Christmas. I especially liked all the blood, the dead cat throwing incident, and the eyeball popping scene (with its touchingly romantic ending). Also the baby-stomping–those of us who watch for structure will note that the baby tree is stomped very early and so this redemptive moment late in the movie is an echo of the earlier rape of Eden. Yes, yes, one of your best picks. 🙂

p.s. You are a deeply disturbed person. But much appreciated.

  2. Love TREEVENGE! LOVE IT! Also love HOBO!

  3. I love the moment the two trees are holding on to one another for dear life, and then are torn apart. Tragedy with a delicious peanuty hilarious centre. What more could you want?

    • Actually, it also shows how a moral commentary can be infused into an image with lighting and music. The scenes of the trucks with piles of trees, the long rows of trees, all have strangely moving echos of oppression.

  4. I am just glad that I got a very small tree this year.
