I recently saw the film adaptation of Disgrace, J.M. Coetzee’s 1999 Booker Prize winning novel. In the novel, David Lurie is a white college professor in post-apartheid South Africa who has an affair with one of his students, a girl named Melanie Issacs. Melanie files a complaint against Lurie and he is dismissed from his post.
